10 Questions to Ask Before Buying Used Construction Equipment

1. Ask for references, complete with phone numbers and email addresses. Any reputable dealer will be more than willing to provide references from happy clients. If not, move on to another seller.

2. Inquire about how the company handles customer disputes. Occasional disputes are a normal part of doing business. A reputable business deals with them infrequently and in a fair and considered manner.

3. It is reasonable to expect that any piece of equipment be tested before resale. This is true whether you’re purchasing on site or having it shipped to you. Before you purchase, verify the dealer has performed the appropriate testing.

4. If there’s appropriate space on site, ask for a demo. Watching the equipment in action will give you a better idea of how it will operate if you decide to buy.

5. Take note of how long the seller has operated at their current location. Do they have their own storage facility, or do they ship products from offsite? You’re looking for well established companies with robust operations.

6. Have a detailed conversation about the seller’s return policy. Don’t buy unless you’re 100% comfortable with your options should you be dissatisfied with a purchase. In the best case scenario, you should be able to return it for a full refund.

7. If the seller offers a money-back return policy, ask about the company’s relationship with its bank and who to contact in case of a dispute. It never hurts to be prepared.

8. Ask your seller to go over the features of your warranty so you clearly understand what service options are available to you should you need them. Reputable used equipment companies pride themselves on customer loyalty. It means they’ve worked hard to provide buyer satisfaction.

9. Are you dealing with a seller or a broker? Sellers are preferred because brokers might mark up the price to cover their commission.

10. Investigate whether the company selling used construction equipment has operated under an assortment of business names over the years. This is a huge red flag—it could be an indicator the company has potentially changed its identity to (among other things) cheat customers out of service benefits and warranty plans.
