How to Select the Right Battery for Your Heavy Equipment
Cat Batteries

Don’t let a dead battery slow down your operation.

Replacing a worn-out battery is fast and hassle-free, and the team at Yancey Bros. makes it easy to find the right battery to fit your equipment.

Whether you need battery selection guidance, safe battery installation, or routine battery maintenance, we’re here to keep your equipment powered.

There Are Three Types of Batteries

General duty batteries: Similar to the batteries found in cars, trucks, and RVs, general duty batteries power everyday equipment with light to medium demands.

Heavy duty batteries: Built for rugged environments and outdoor use, heavy duty batteries deliver maximum power and vibration resistance. They’re standard on all Cat machines and generator sets.

Uninterruptible power supply batteries (UPS): UPS batteries ensure continuous power, even during outages, to protect computer operations and other essential systems.

How to Choose the Right Battery

Power: Choose a battery that’s strong enough to power your equipment. Check the size, voltage, and specifications to ensure it will deliver reliable performance without causing damage.

CCA Rating: Cold cranking amps (CCA) measure a battery’s starting power. A higher CCA gets you faster, more reliable engine starts. It also extends battery life. Because less energy is used to start the engine, the battery requires fewer charging cycles and stays charged longer.

Wet or dry batteries: Wet batteries are affordable, ready to use off the shelf, and often deliver better performance, which is important when working in rugged environments. They are considered hazardous materials, which can make handling and transport more difficult. Dry batteries last longer, are easier to transport, and require less maintenance.

Location of the battery: Batteries with side posts are less prone to corrosion and typically require less cleaning. Top-post batteries offer easier access, making cable work and jump-starting easier because there’s more room to work.
