Sound Attenuated & Weather Resistive Enclosures
We can provide enclosures from weather resistive (see IP standard code) to full sound attenuated packages of the most strict dBA reduction specification.
- Modification kits to attenuate existing factory units
- Front radiator air vertical deflector plenums
- Air intake ducts to block open air inlet louvers
- Full interior foam kits, we stock _" and 1-1/2" thick soundfoam
- Skin tight design to match factory style and full walk-in style enclosures
- Steel bent panel style or aluminum framed stressed skin units
- Custom enclosures to meet almost any specification
What is BS EN 60529 (often referred to as the IP Code)?
IP Code is a means of providing a solution to the ambiguous terms of weatherproof, weather resistive, etc. that allows the specifier to make a practicable judgment call as to how severe a degree of weather protection he needs, which in the event of a dispute can be rationalized back to a recognized test criteria.
| NEMA Numeral | IP Equivalent | Typical application in terms of weather with pertinent notes. Engine running application notes. | Application Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | Not Suitable | |
| 2 | 11 | Moderate degree of weather protection, light rain. Solid objects less than two inches e.g. birds or vermin can enter via inlet/outlet. |
Addition of gravity louvers on the outlet and motorized louvers on inlets will raise your chosen “running” IP rating to IP45 for snowdrifts, for example, but only for the standby condition. In this case quote running IP rating with a note for IP45 when stationary, etc. |
| 12 | Good degree of weather protection, medium rain. Solid objects less than two inches e.g. birds or vermin can enter via inlet/outlet. | ||
| 13 | Excellent degree of weather protection, heavy rain (monsoon). | ||
| 14 | Very high degree of weather protection, heavy rain (hurricane). Solid objects less than two inches e.g. birds or vermin can enter via inlet/outlet. |
Yancey uses a polypropylene cell material on air inlets to achieve this rating, which if velocity optimized has some coalescing ability. This results in a very economic attempt at doing the right thing to protect the equipment at a modest cost. To use this with a first digit level of protection of two would make an ideal hurricane solution. | |
| 15 | Environments where water jets are possible such as fire hydrant failures, wash down hoses, etc. Solid objects less than two inches e.g. birds, vermin can enter via inlet / outlet. |
||
| 16 | Ship board low level decks where risk of breaking seas, rear deck of offshore supply vessel etc. Solid objects less than 2 inches e.g. birds, vermin can enter via inlet / outlet. |
Generally speaking, at this level, a coalescer to remove water from the air stream is required to prevent water ingress. | |
| 21 | Weather comments per 11 above. Access is prevented for solid objects greater than _”, e.g. birds, vermin, etc. |
Possibility for light snow where mesh will provide a catalyst to keep snow at bay. | |
| 22 | Weather comments per 12 above. Access prevented for solid objects greater than _”, e.g. birds, vermin, etc. |
||
| 23 | Per 22 but note improved second digit. | ||
| 24 | Per 22 but note improved second digit. | Ideal for hurricane use where smaller solid object rating provides additional protection against airborne foreign objects such as tree limbs, etc. | |
| 25 | Per 22 but note improved second digit. | ||
| 26 | Per 22 but note improved second digit. | ||
| 31 | Higher 1st digit rating reduces solid object entry to 1/8". | Would provide better snow protection in a running application. However, the size of air orifices gets larger due to recovery of free area. | |
| 32 | Per 31 with improved water protection. See application note. | A three as the first digit takes us into small animal protection such as keeping snakes out. Technicians not wanting surprises will appreciate that! This would have prevented a recent example of an irate customer complaining that a dirt dobber had fouled up the operating mechanism of a transfer switch located within gen set enclosure. | |
| 33 | Per 31 with improved water protection. | ||
| 34 | Per 31 with improved water protection. | ||
| 35 | Per 31 with improved water protection. | ||
| 36 | Per 31 with improved water protection. | ||
| 41 | Improved first digit takes us into the potential of coarse filters for objects less than 1mm (0.040’) when running and uses filtration | Four as a first digit not often seen in the generating set industry. | |
| 42 | Per 41 but with improved water protection. | ||
| 43 | Per 41 but with improved water protection. | ||
| 44 | Per 41 but with improved water protection. | ||
| 45 | Per 41 but with improved water protection. | ||
| 46 | Per 41 but with improved water protection. | ||
| 51 | Dusty conditions, quarries, desert, extended construction duty for critical equipment. Light rain possible. | ||
| 52 | As 51 with improved water rating. | ||
| 53 | As 51 with improved water rating. | ||
| 3 | 54 | As 51 with improved water rating. | |
| 55 | As 51 with improved water rating. | ||
| 4 | 56 | Saliferous environment, heavy seas, keeping out salt particles. | Used extensively on North Sea oil and gas offshore platforms. Machines with ten years of experience still function as new on inside. Excellent rating for a shipboard application for critical equipment. |
| 4X | 66 | Per Nema 4 but "dust tight." | Not practicable, detailed for example. |
| 6 | 67 | Dust tight and protected against immersion. | Not practicable, detailed for example. |
| 12 | 52 | Protected from dust and falling water at 15 deg from the vertical. | |
| 13 | 54 | Protected from dust and splashing water from all angles. |
