Yancey’s Bus Division Is Helping To Make Georgia’s Heat and Humidity More Tolerable for Our School Kids

In late May of this year, a seven-year-old student in Arizona was overcome with heat and had to be taken to the hospital.  This didn’t happen on the playground or in a tight contained space, it happened while he was riding home on a school bus without air conditioning.

Three weeks earlier, eight high school students from Fresno, California, had to be taken to the hospital suffering from heat exhaustion while on their way to Disneyland for their Senior Trip.  Their bus, which had broken down on the road, also didn’t have any type of air handling system.

For all of us that have ridden school buses in Georgia at some time in our lives, we know how cramped and uncomfortable the afternoon rides can be.  Add to this the heat and high humidity we are accustomed to from April through October, and you can begin to see the possible issues that might arise.  What is surprising is that only approximately 10% of school buses in Georgia are air conditioned.

Yancey Bus Sales & Service has taken steps to assist school districts with the challenges of keeping our kids safe from heat exhaustion as we are now a sales and service dealer for Carrier® Air Conditioning and their line of school bus AC units.

In partnering with Carrier, Yancey Bus is now able to offer products from one of the world’s top manufacturers of cooling systems.  In addition to selling and installing the Carrier School Bus units, we can also provide genuine OEM parts and provide certified service work on all Carrier bus units.

The two primary Carrier units we install are both “in-wall” systems.  These units can be mounted in the front and back walls of the buses.  Both are designed to free up the overhead compartment where traditional evaporators would be located.

The Carrier IW-1 is flush mounted to both the front and/or back wall of the bus.  The second model, the Carrier IW-2, can be mounted inside the front wall above the driver’s seat.  Both units are capable of cooling a bus with up to to 84 passengers to temperatures significanly lower than ambient temperatures. They produce 45,000 BTU of cooling and move 800 cubic feet of air per minute.

Made of lightweight aluminum, each unit features an integrated motor cover panel for ease of service and state-of-the-art enhanced cooling coils.

Yancey Bus is also equipped with the parts and personnel to service existing Carrier school bus units.  Our highly-trained Technicians are qualified to provide full service work on AC condensers, evaporators, refrigerant hoses and fittings and compressors.  We also actively retrofit AC systems on existing busses already in service.

If your school district doesn’t have all their buses air conditioned, ask them to look into adding this feature.  It could possibly prevent heat related injuries from taking place, and it will surely make afternoon rides more tolerable for our school children.
